Legal Research & Writing Party 2006

Legal Research & Writing was one of the classes we took alone with just our section. And we had it Fall through Spring. Plus we just finished this big briefs on a fictional case suing a kid recklessly and possibly intentionally killing a beloved and elderly cat "Muffy" in front of its child owner. Outrageous! To celebrate finishing the brief and almost being done with the first year of law school our kind LRW Professor Moran got us a funny Muffy cake.

Here are some of the best Muffy quotes:
  • "If Jack had chased after a boy, "just trying to scare him", with a tractor, a large and dangerous machine that has killed before, would you not find that to be outrageous?" -JK

  • "Based on the common-sense notion that running over a cat is somewhat different from running over inanimate, inorganic property, California has heaped statutory and jurisprudential disdain upon those who, like Callaghan, purposefully terrorize animals." - JZ

  • "The trial court seems to envision a harmless child innocently chasing a cat through bucolic meadows. The outrageousness of Callaghan's behavior, however, must be evaluated in light of the context in which they actually occurred." - JZ

  • "Judge Cohen can't handle the truth!" -SH

  • "Is there some reason we're not doing trespass to chattels?" -JP
  • "I believe it's because in that case you are only responsible for the cost of the chattel. I think elderly deaf arthritic cats go for maybe $7 on ebay." - EA

  • "There are two means of refuge from the misery of life: music and cats." - Albert Schweitzer
