Dinner at Professor Leslie's 2005

Our section has Contracts with Professor Leslie and he's our section advisor/spiritual leader. He invited us over for dinner on Saturday, and even though we were mostly all still hungover from PILA we happily obliged. His wife made three delicious lasagnas for us as well as salads.

After dinner and conversation we checked out their home theater in the basement and he showed us "the music greats" including Elvis. Audra and I had never seen a video of Elvis performing and we promptly fell in love. Too bad we're about 30 years too late.

PILA Semiformal Dance 2005

On Friday, UVA Law's Public Interest Law Association (PILA) hosted a Benefit Auction and Semiformal Dance at the Doubletree Hotel in Downtown Charlottesville.

PILA Semiformal 2005
Spoiler alert: Dance was really fun!

The PILA auction raises money for law students interested in working in public interest law to help them during unpaid/low-paying summer internships. They get donations of things to auction off like a week in someone's parent's beach house, gift certificates to local restaurants, or activities like dinner hosted at a professor's house.

The 1L class had a preparty in one of the hotel rooms that was more or less on-going throughout the dance.

There were dancing and drinking in the main ballroom, and tables outside the perimeter where you make written bids for items big and small. The bidding was cut off at midnight so people tried to wait for the more coveted items, ebay-style. The problem is that because of drinking and partying sometimes you forget to swing by for final bid. Each 1L section was encouraged to find something big to up for bid- and one of classmates family put a week at the beach house up for a bid, which was really nice. This years dance also had a masquerade theme though that mostly involved a few masks being made generally available. Lots of fun dancing and partying in general.

My Halloween Party 2005

I threw a big Halloween party at my apartment like I've done the last few years in Arlington. Law students are insane though and the fallout was much worse than usual. That said it was really fun before the fall. Here are pictures of mostly the awesome and respectful people. I left out the baddies.

Since it's law school, I had a "Law and Order" costume theme. People ran with it and were awesome. Also I had it a week before Halloween so I wouldn't be competing with the official law school parties.

Cathy and Mike's Wedding 2005

Cathy and Mike got married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Saint Clair, Pennsylvania. People say that Catholic wedding ceremonies are dull.  Well, Mike's childhood priest certainly livened up the day with stories about other married couples, questions about Mike and Cathy's travel history and plans, and observations about the wedding guests. I continue to ask Cathy for a copy of the wedding ceremony tape recording but she continues to politely decline.

The reception at the Pottsville Club in Pottsville, Pennsylvania was really fun, and one particularly fun thing was that the Cathy and Mike both danced one-on-one with a lot of the wedding guests.  It was a fun and personal way to spend more time with the bride and groom.  I took a turn dancing with Mike, but I think due to the presence of some beverage shots at the wedding, I might have accidentally cut a long line of female guests. Well, you snooze, you loose.

I first met Cathy through my sorority sister Becky.  The two of them had gone on Semester at Sea together during college, and Cathy moved to DC after college in 2001. Cathy didn't know many people in DC, and Becky was living in Las Vegas at the time, so she asked if we could get to know Cathy. I'm so glad I did because Cathy became one of my closest friends.  I first met Mike a little while later at a party in January of 2002. Before they were even married, they'd been at my side for birthday parties, a graduation, and even break-ups. I was so pleased to be able to attend their wedding in Pennsylvania. Congratulations!

Rolling Stones Concert 2005

I went to the Rolling Stones concert in Scott Stadium tonight. It was open to the general public and it seemed like all of Charlottesville was there. It was crazy. The Rolling Stones were my first concert in 1997, so I knew that their concerts are amazing. And this reminded me a lot of my first one with crazy engineering feats so that different parts of the audience could get a close up view. The Rolling Stones are always awesome.

Concert! My view was a little blocked but I could see more than this picture shows.

But also, there was a bomb threat! We cleared out the stadium, they established it was a fake threat (but did they really?) and then we went back in for the rest of the concert.
